Currently in class we are learning about how to use lights in 3D Studio Max. A few examples of what we are learning include:
- Omni light, which can be used for candles and lightbulbs, and projects light in every direction; - Spotlight, which is exactly as it sounds; and - Direct Light, which works like a laser pointer. This subject matter is quite interesting, and I wish I was able to enjoy it more, but it is not the only thing I need to worry about. Right now, school is full of stress. There is so much competition and too many expectations on today's youth -- not giving them enough time to actually be the kids that they are. One of the most stressful things that you can go through is the constant pressure that can feel like it’s stripping you of your life and personality. One of the ways we can fix this is to be more concerned with the present and less worried about the future. If kids only care about what their future is, and have a set plan and expectations, it can be all the more devastating when their hopes and dreams aren’t what they are expecting. One of the hardest parts about all of this is that the schools often don't support the kids where they are but where they expect them to be. Keep this in mind the next time you see a peer or student, or even your child, stressed over homework and to not remind them about their future, but to be kind and help them in the moment. - 3ds Max lights is a really interesting tool. - School sometimes hurts kids and can feel like it destroys dreams. - Everyone wants to learn, but not this way. - Be kind when you see someone troubled over work.

Ive given this subject a lot of thought lately, and I have come up with a few ideas that high schools could implement to make it much better for students. (Disclaimer, this is based on my personal opinions and experiences) one thing that I think myself and many other students can agree on is that we don't have enough free time (or time to be active and ourselves) some could argue that lunch is a good opportunity to do just that, but with only 30 minutes, you have a choice to sacrifice either eating or physical activity for the other. What the schools could do is actually implement a recess of sorts into the day, even if it takes off of other classes, students mental health is very valuable, and currently, the only effort DSA has put towards keeping kids sane is a student services area, and not a good one at that. There have been multiple studies showing how important recess is for older kids as well as you. www.dsa.dpsnc.net
-schools need to get recess back in place. -schools need better councilors and support. -schools need to understand kids better. -schools need less work. After being in the game design pathway for a while, Ive had the pleasure of being able to go through a lot of tests and quizzes. One thing that I have noticed and thought that I should call attention to is the repetitive manor of the questions. While I understand that the exact amount of content that can easily be translated into these tests and quizzes can be low, I have experienced major doubt in choosing the same answer five times in a row. Just recently, a test we took covered some minor things from the past year as well as went over those that were more recent and fresher in our brains. I had known the more recent answers easily but it felt like all of the questions were changed slightly as to make them seem “different” where in reality, the only difference is the ideas we have about these things. In the future, I would like to see a change in this that refers to the curriculum in a much more confusing way, so that doubts are not crippling to the grades of those taking.
https://app.schoology.com/assignment/1882483884/assessment -Regarding the past tests and quizzes, I have noticed a pattern. -The tests and quizzes all have very repetitive questions. -This feature puts a lot of doubt in my mind on wether my answer is correct. -I would like to see this changed. During this past month or so, I have fallen greatly behind in my 3D modeling and am currently quite concerned, as someone with attention issues it is difficult for me to stay on task, especially towards the end of the day, but I try my best anyway. Despite my efforts, I still am at least three projects behind and risk failing (seeing how we have a strict late work rule). I am currently working on a picture frame with sweep, which is progress, but concerning to me how lose the end of the quarter is. Our unit has been focusing on the advanced techniques in 3Ds Max. However, I do feel as though I am learning and enjoy practicing new skills and such in the program itself. I enjoy my classmates and their company and think that if I focus more I will be able to get a lot more work done in this next week.
knowledge.autodesk.com/support/3ds-max -I am worried that I will fail this class. -I try my best despite distractions. -We are close to the end of the quarter. -I feel as though I am learning though. -I will try my best in these last few days. Another issue I happen to have with finals is that of the rules of exemption. Now, I’m not against exemption as a whole, but when the absences come into play, things start to get complicated. There is no excuse for missing school in the eyes of DPS except for being hospitalized. I am unable to be exempt from my Spanish class only due to too many absences, but 4 of them are playing off of the death of my grandfather. Sadly, if I’m not the one dying, it doesn’t matter, and I feel like I am being punished for doing the only thing i could at the time. Completely unfair, even with a high A in the class.www.dpsnc.net/Domain/47
As we near the end of the year, finals get closer and closer, and as for some this may seem like a blessing, others feel it torture. All of the classes have dropped immensely large work loads on the kids, at the same time. When preparing, kids feel obligated to give up one classes work and grade to work on another class, in a sort of moral dilemma situation. Researchers have struggled to find the main reasons for the rapid decline in mental health in today's teens, but I feel that if they only look at what we are forced to go through every day. But I feel that we can fix this by placing an educated board of teens and students in a council that gives them an equal say in the rules and projects made by the people who only have a distant view of our struggles.www.dpsnc.net/Domain/47
In Scientific Visualization we just recently switched to the new unit of using Adobe illustrator, and as someone who was brought up with Photoshop, this was a huge change. For one, the transform tool is completely different. instead of the "command select" in photoshop, the transform is free select, so when you drag and click, you immediately have the option to move the selected line anywhere you want. Another issue that I have is the point system. No, you do not earn rewards for the more points you have, you just have more options on how how to manipulate your creation, for better or for worse. I realize that Adobe made illustrator for a reason and i definitely believe that I will acquire the skills necessary for it, but the adjustment is tough.
-Adobe Illustrator has a very different layout than photoshop -Adobe Illustrator is beneficial to things I have not yet learned -Adobe Illustrator can make cool things that I don't know about -I am not a big fan of Illustrator helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/transforming-objects.html This past year in Scientific Visualization, we have been required to do regular blog posts, making them the key to success in the class. However, there is one problem. Kids are forgetting to do these reflections, and with no makeup options and missing a post is unredeemable. I personally know multiple people who are barely passing and still get all A's on their quizzes, only failing from the prioritizing of other classes homework and forgetting about the posts. This is an issue as some kids are unable to access internet from home, and get punished for it. Some kids are so overcome with stress and anxiety that they only get an hour at home to relax from work. These blog posts hurt. Not only our grades, but our mental states. Studies have actually shown that too much homework can end up taking a toll on kids health, and some mental health professionals have stated that students should not even have to feel obligated or absolutely forced to do all their homework because if that is the case, serious consequences can follow. I propose a solution. Rather than getting rid of the blog posts because the teacher needs to see our thought process and understanding of the current topic, students have an opportunity to learn from their errors, correct their blog posts, and have a chance at a fair grade. Do you agree?
- Blog posts are harmful. - Too much work can take a serious toll. - Students mental health should be valued. - Schools don't understand students. - Blog posts are much too serious. www.imgur.com/a/G6rU8 https://www.healthline.com/health-news/children-more-homework-means-more-stress-031114#3 In class at the moment we are working with color theory. But it is not as fun as it sounds. Myself, as an individual, do not own photoshop, and am not able to do some of the work at home, aside from the fact that I was away from home this past weekend. This is upsetting to me because we were given a very short amount of time to complete a very large amount of work. I am currently working on the color theory worksheets that involve photoshop as I do not have those resources available to me at the moment. If the grades are going in this following day I would consider myself screwed, as to most likely not being able to complete the 23 essays due by tomorrow night. Thank you and I hope whoever is reading this will pity my soul and take action.
